**New Delhi, May 21, 2025:** India today commemorated the 34th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Tributes poured in from leaders across the political spectrum, remembering his contributions to the nation, particularly his role in ushering in the computer revolution.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects on X, stating, “Today, on his death anniversary, I pay my tributes to our former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.”

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge shared a video tribute, hailing Rajiv Gandhi as a “great son of India” who “inspired hope among millions.” Kharge highlighted Gandhi’s visionary leadership in preparing India for the 21st century, citing his initiatives like lowering the voting age to 18, strengthening Panchayati Raj, leading the telecommunications and IT revolution, implementing computerization programs, ensuring continuous peace agreements, launching the universal immunization program, and introducing a new education policy focused on inclusive education.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee acknowledged Rajiv Gandhi’s vision, stating he “was a visionary and died a martyr for India.”

Congress leader Sachin Pilot emphasized Gandhi’s progressive vision, saying his decisions “took India to new heights,” adding that “his contribution is a source of inspiration for us.”

Rajiv Gandhi, who assumed office after his mother Indira Gandhi’s assassination, is widely credited with modernizing India through technological advancements. His initiatives included the introduction of computers, the strengthening of Panchayati Raj institutions to empower local governance, and the establishment of Navodaya Vidyalayas in rural and urban areas. He also introduced the National Policy on Education (NPE) in 1986. Notably, he lowered the voting age from 21 to 18, empowering young adults and fostering greater civic engagement. His legacy continues to inspire generations.
