Tue May 20 11:29:15 UTC 2025: ## Spain Experiences Communications Outage Following Network Update

**MADRID, May 20, 2025** – Spanish telecom giant Telefonica reported a significant communications outage affecting fixed phone and internet lines in several regions of Spain today, May 20, 2025. The company attributed the disruption to ongoing network update operations.

The outage has sparked concern as it comes just three weeks after a major power blackout impacted Spain and Portugal on April 28th, the cause of which remains under investigation.

Telefonica stated that crews are working diligently to restore services, and the critical 112 emergency lines have already been brought back online in affected areas after initial disruptions.

According to the Downdetector monitoring website, the disruption primarily impacts fixed-line internet services in regions including Aragon, Valencia, Andalusia, Extremadura, the Basque Country, and Navarra. Other major providers, including Orange’s MasOrange, appear unaffected. Telefonica’s mobile services are reportedly functioning normally.

Telefonica is the second-largest telecom operator in Spain, raising concerns about the scale and impact of the outage. Further updates are expected as the company continues its efforts to restore full service.
