**NEW DELHI –** WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging app, experienced a significant outage in India on Saturday, leaving users unable to send messages and upload status updates. Down Detector, an app outage tracking platform, reported that over 81% of users experienced issues sending messages, with an additional 16% reporting problems with the overall app functionality.

Users took to X (formerly Twitter) to report the issue, expressing frustration at their inability to communicate. Similar outages were also reported for Facebook and Instagram, both also owned by Meta. While WhatsApp has yet to issue an official statement regarding the outage, the incident follows a major WhatsApp outage in late February which affected users globally.

This WhatsApp disruption comes on the heels of a nationwide outage affecting the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India’s popular digital payments system. Millions of users were unable to make transactions earlier in the day due to technical issues reported by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The NPCI attributed the UPI disruption to intermittent technical problems and stated they were working to resolve the issue. The combined outages caused significant disruption to daily life, impacting communication and online transactions across India.
