Fri Jan 17 13:17:34 UTC 2025: ## Bollywood Debut Flops: “Azaad” Fails to Live Up to its Potential

**Mumbai, India** – Abhishek Kapoor’s latest film, “Azaad,” featuring the Bollywood debuts of Raveena Tandon’s daughter Rasha Thadani and Ajay Devgn’s nephew Aaman Devgan, has received scathing reviews. While the film’s star, a handsome black stallion, undeniably steals the show, critics argue the equine lead is not enough to save a film lacking a coherent script and direction.

Described as a messy blend of “Romeo & Juliet,” “Lagaan,” and “Hidalgo,” “Azaad” meanders for two-and-a-half hours without a clear narrative focus. The weak screenplay hinders the performances of the debutantes, despite their evident enthusiasm. Thadani, in particular, is underutilized, appearing sparingly throughout the film. Devgan, while given more screen time, is also hampered by the film’s shortcomings.

The plot centers on Govind (Devgan), a stable boy who clashes with a tyrannical zamindar in 1920s India. He befriends Azaad, a powerful horse, and joins a band of outlaws led by Vikram Singh (Ajay Devgn). The film uses Azaad as a symbol of freedom, drawing parallels to Rana Pratap’s horse Chetak. However, the narrative fails to develop this symbolism effectively.

Despite impressive stunts and a few musical numbers, including a Holi song and a romantic duet featuring the horse Azaad alongside the human leads, “Azaad” ultimately falls flat. The film’s attempts at addressing class oppression and rebellion are poorly executed, leaving audiences unimpressed. The climactic horse race serves as a fitting metaphor for the film itself – chaotic and lacking in order.

Critics unanimously agree that “Azaad” is a missed opportunity, failing to capitalize on the potential of its young stars and its central theme. While the horse’s performance is lauded, it cannot compensate for the film’s significant flaws. Whether Thadani and Devgan will recover from this debut is yet to be seen, but they’ll undoubtedly need stronger material to showcase their talents.
