**New Delhi, January 17** – The Union Cabinet has approved the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission for approximately 1 crore central government employees and pensioners, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced on Tuesday. While the exact implementation date is yet to be determined, the government anticipates the commission’s formation in 2026.
The new commission will review and recommend adjustments to salaries and allowances, significantly impacting the financial well-being of government employees and pensioners. A key anticipated change is a potential increase in the minimum monthly salary from the current ₹18,000 under the 7th Pay Commission to between ₹25,000 and ₹26,000. This figure, however, is contingent upon the commission’s final recommendations.
The 8th Pay Commission is expected to address various allowances, including Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners, as well as House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Travel Allowance (TA). The fitment factor, currently 2.57, is also likely to be revised, potentially increasing to 3.0. The government aims for a smooth transition from the 7th Pay Commission, whose tenure concludes on December 31, 2025.
An online salary calculator is expected to be made available to allow employees to estimate their potential salary increase based on projected changes to basic pay, the pay matrix, the fitment factor, and allowances. The government will release further details regarding the 8th Pay Commission once the commission is officially formed and its recommendations are approved.
