Thu Jan 16 14:16:04 UTC 2025: **NASA Astronauts Conduct First Spacewalk Since 2024 Abort**

Cape Canaveral, FL (January 16, 2025) – NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Nick Hague successfully completed a spacewalk today, marking the first such event for the agency since an aborted attempt last summer. The spacewalk, which took place 420 km above Turkmenistan, involved crucial repairs to the International Space Station (ISS), including work on the NICER X-ray telescope.

Williams, commander of the ISS, and Hague undertook the overdue repairs after a series of delays extended their mission significantly. Originally launched last June aboard Boeing’s Starliner capsule for a planned weeklong test flight, technical issues with the capsule forced an empty return. Subsequent delays in the launch of their replacement crew mean Williams and her colleague Butch Wilmore will remain on the ISS until late March or early April – a ten-month stay.

This was Williams’ eighth spacewalk. The previous pause in US spacewalks was due to a water leak in the airlock, a problem NASA reports has now been resolved. Williams is scheduled for another spacewalk next week with Wilmore.
