Mon Jan 13 11:30:53 UTC 2025: ## Banks Open for Lohri, Closed for Makar Sankranti in Some Cities

**New Delhi, India** – While banks will remain open across most of India for Lohri on January 13th, 2025, Makar Sankranti on January 14th will see closures in several cities, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar.

The RBI’s calendar designates January 14th as a holiday in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Itanagar, Kanpur, and Lucknow. This is due to the celebration of Makar Sankranti, also known as Pongal, Maghe Sankranti, or Magh Bihu in different regions. The date also marks the birthday of Hazrat Ali in some areas. Banks in Delhi-NCR, however, will remain open on both days.

Customers are advised to contact their local branches to confirm holiday closures. While some banks will be closed for Makar Sankranti, online banking and ATMs will remain operational.

January 2025 also includes several other bank holidays, including Thiruvalluvar Day (January 15th) in Tamil Nadu, Uzhavar Thirunal (January 16th) in Tamil Nadu, and the birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose/Vir Surendrasai Jayanti (January 23rd) in West Bengal, Odisha, and Tripura. The RBI releases this holiday calendar annually under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
