Mon Jan 13 11:30:44 UTC 2025: ## Record-Breaking Crowds Mark Start of Prayagraj Kumbh Mela 2025
**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India** – The Prayagraj Kumbh Mela 2025, a once-in-144-years religious event, commenced on January 13th with a record-breaking turnout. Authorities estimate that over 10 million devotees took a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam (confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers) on the first day alone. The Kumbh Mela, which continues until February 26th, is expected to draw tens of millions more pilgrims over the next several weeks.
The massive gathering has been met with a comprehensive security and logistical plan. Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar stated that the event is a blend of faith and modernity, with advanced technology deployed alongside traditional policing to ensure a safe and smooth experience for all attendees. He highlighted the absence of any untoward incidents on the first day. Additional measures included a 12-kilometer-long ghat (riverbank) and infrastructure designed to accommodate an estimated 100 million pilgrims, exceeding initial projections of 40 million.
The first “Shahi Snan” (royal bath), a major ritual, is scheduled for January 14th, Makar Sankranti. Pilgrims from 20 countries, including Brazil, have already joined the festivities, expressing their awe and enthusiasm for the event.
While the overwhelming majority of attendees are devout, the Mela’s commencement hasn’t been without minor controversy. The placement of a statue of Mulayam Singh Yadav, founder of the Samajwadi Party, in one of the camps prompted a response from Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, urging against such potentially divisive actions.
Despite this, the overall atmosphere remains one of intense religious fervor and national pride. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings, expressing his hope that the Kumbh Mela would infuse new energy and enthusiasm into the lives of all participants. The event is expected to continue drawing massive crowds throughout its duration, solidifying its position as one of the world’s largest peaceful gatherings. Authorities are maintaining a high state of alert to ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees.
