Sat Jan 11 22:45:00 UTC 2025: ## China’s Wang Yi Visits Maldives Amidst Shifting Geopolitical Dynamics

**Male, Maldives –** Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made an unannounced visit to the Maldives on Friday, holding talks with President Mohamed Muizzu. The meeting comes amidst a period of evolving relations between the Maldives and both China and India.

The visit marks the first high-level Chinese delegation to the Maldives since President Muizzu’s visit to China in January 2024, where the two nations upgraded their relationship to a “comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.” During his meeting with Mr. Wang, President Muizzu emphasized the need to accelerate infrastructure projects agreed upon during his previous visit, prioritizing social housing and road development. He also sought China’s support for economic diversification efforts in agriculture and fisheries. Minister Wang praised President Muizzu’s vision and reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ development.

The Maldives’ relationship with China has been complex. Initially, President Muizzu’s administration leaned towards China, but has since balanced its relations with India. This shift followed India’s replacement of its military personnel in the Maldives with civilians and a subsequent thaw in relations marked by President Muizzu’s October 2024 visit to Delhi, where he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India has also provided significant financial aid to the Maldives. Recent visits by Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel and Defence Minister Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon to India further solidified the improving relationship, with India providing USD 4 million in military equipment to the Maldives National Defence Force. These actions highlight the competitive dynamics between India and China for influence in the Indian Ocean region.
