**New Delhi, January 6, 2025** – United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan announced today that the U.S. is finalizing steps to eliminate obstacles hindering civil nuclear cooperation with India. This move, long awaited since a 2007 agreement between President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, will grant India access to restricted U.S. technology.
The primary hurdle, differing liability rules for nuclear accidents, appears to be nearing resolution. Sullivan stated that the necessary paperwork will be completed shortly, paving the way for the supply of American nuclear reactors to India. This addresses a major concern that had previously stalled projects and delayed India’s goal of adding 20,000 MW of nuclear power capacity by 2030. The two countries agreed in 2019 to build six U.S. nuclear power plants in India.
Sullivan’s visit comes two weeks before Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration and is expected to encompass discussions on a range of issues, including the impact of Chinese infrastructure projects, artificial intelligence, space, military licensing, and China’s economic influence.
