**AHMEDABAD, INDIA (January 6, 2025)** – A two-month-old infant from Rajasthan has been diagnosed with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection at a private hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The child, admitted on December 24th with respiratory symptoms, tested positive on December 26th, but the hospital reported the case to authorities on January 6th. The infant is currently stable, having been previously placed on a ventilator and is now in isolation.

This follows two similar HMPV cases reported earlier in the day in Karnataka. The Indian government is monitoring the situation closely, with the ICMR tracking HMPV trends nationwide, and the WHO providing updates on the global situation.

Dr. Sandeep Budhiraja, group medical director of Max Healthcare, clarified that HMPV is not a novel virus, but a common respiratory virus circulating during winter months alongside influenza, adenovirus, rhinovirus, and COVID-19. He recommended standard preventative measures such as mask-wearing, social distancing, and frequent handwashing to mitigate the spread.
