Fri Dec 13 03:06:42 UTC 2024: ## 18-Year-Old D. Gukesh Shatters Chess Record, Inspired by a Familiar Face

**NEW DELHI** – Indian chess prodigy D. Gukesh has etched his name in history, becoming the youngest-ever world chess champion at the age of 18 years, 8 months, and 14 days. This surpasses the previous record held by Garry Kasparov, who achieved the title at 22 years, 6 months, and 27 days in 1985.

Gukesh’s remarkable achievement is further highlighted by a unique connection to India’s 2011 Cricket World Cup victory. His mental health coach, Paddy Upton, also served as the mental conditioning coach for the Indian cricket team during their triumphant World Cup run. Upton’s association with India extends to the national test cricket team’s ascension to number one ranking and the Indian men’s hockey team’s bronze medal win at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The intense pressure of competing at the highest level at such a young age was acknowledged. Even chess greats like Magnus Carlsen have admitted to experiencing nervousness in championship matches. Gukesh, after winning the Candidates Tournament earlier this year, proactively sought out a mental conditioning coach, leading him to Upton.

Upton’s expertise in mental conditioning played a crucial role in Gukesh’s success, demonstrating the importance of mental fortitude alongside exceptional skill in high-stakes competitions. This victory not only marks a significant milestone for Indian chess but also underscores the growing recognition of mental preparation in elite sports.
