Fri Dec 13 03:28:33 UTC 2024: ## One Nation, One Election Proposal Faces Opposition
**NEW DELHI** – A proposed “One Nation, One Election” bill has sparked a heated debate among India’s political parties. While the BJP and the National Peoples Party voiced support, the Congress, AAP, BSP, and CPI(M) expressed strong opposition. The proposal, based on a report from a committee examining the feasibility, received feedback from 47 political parties.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) argued that simultaneous elections would severely disadvantage regional parties, who lack the resources and electoral strategy capabilities to compete effectively with national parties. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal vehemently opposed the bill, labeling it a “Delhi dictatorship whim” and vowing Bengal’s resistance. Other parties raised concerns about the logistical challenges and potential for the postponement of elections due to unforeseen circumstances. The proposal is reportedly drawing inspiration from the electoral systems of seven other countries.
