KOLKATA, INDIA – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has signaled her interest in leading the INDIA opposition alliance, sparking debate within the coalition. Banerjee’s statement follows a string of recent electoral defeats for the alliance, raising questions about its future direction.

In an interview with News18 Bangla on Friday, Banerjee stated that while she originally formed the INDIA bloc, she would be willing to take on a leadership role if the current leadership is unable to effectively manage it. She emphasized the need for inclusivity and smooth functioning.

Several key INDIA bloc leaders have voiced their support for Banerjee’s potential leadership. NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar praised Banerjee’s capabilities and experience, while Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut expressed the desire for her continued involvement as a major partner. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, however, noted that no formal discussions on the matter have taken place yet. Other RJD leaders have suggested that a decision will be made after consultations among all alliance partners.

The BJP has also weighed in on the developing situation. BJP leader Pravin Darekar suggested that Pawar’s support for Banerjee indicates a lack of confidence in Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ability to lead the opposition.

The INDIA bloc’s future leadership remains uncertain, with upcoming discussions expected to determine the alliance’s direction. Banerjee’s willingness to lead, coupled with the statements of support from several key figures, points to a potential shift in the alliance’s power dynamics.
