Mumbai Indians have re-appointed former Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene as their Head Coach, the franchise announced on Sunday. Jayawardene, who previously held the position from 2017 to 2022, returns to the helm after a two-year stint as the franchise’s Global Head of Cricket.
During his first tenure, Jayawardene led Mumbai Indians to three IPL trophies, making him a highly successful figure within the team. “In 2017, we focused on building a talented team, and we achieved great success,” Jayawardene said in a press release. “Now, returning to the same moment in history, with the opportunity to further strengthen the love for MI, build on the vision of the owners, and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians, is an exciting challenge I am looking forward to.”
Franchise owner Akash Ambani expressed his excitement at Jayawardene’s return, highlighting his leadership qualities and contributions to the team. “We are thrilled to have Mahela back as the Head Coach of Mumbai Indians,” Ambani stated. “His leadership, knowledge, and passion for the game have always benefited MI.”
Ambani also thanked former South African player Mark Boucher for his services as Head Coach in the past two seasons. “His expertise and dedication were pivotal during his time, and he has now become an integral member of the MI family,” Ambani said.
The return of Jayawardene comes as Mumbai Indians look to rebuild after a disappointing 2024 season where they finished 10th in the IPL standings. The team has also appointed Hardik Pandya as their new captain, replacing Rohit Sharma who led the team to five IPL titles since 2013.
