Turkish referee Elif Karaarslan, 24, has been banned from officiating after a sex tape allegedly featuring her and referees’ observer Orhan Erdemir, 61, surfaced online. However, Karaarslan vehemently denies being in the video, claiming it was fabricated using AI technology.
Her legal team stated that the video was “created entirely through AI from someone else’s social media account,” and was deliberately intended to harm her reputation. Erdemir, on the other hand, has confessed to being the male in the video, expressing deep regret and emotional distress over the scandal.
Karaarslan, a former Besiktas player who had a promising career cut short due to injuries, has gained a significant social media following and was a rising star in Turkish refereeing, officiating matches at the Under-17s level.
Both Karaarslan and Erdemir have been banned for life by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) in the wake of the scandal. The incident has sparked a debate about the misuse of AI technology and its potential to damage reputations.
