Fri Sep 20 06:00:34 UTC 2024: ## US to Host AI Safety Summit in November to Address Growing Concerns

**San Francisco, CA** – The United States will host a summit on artificial intelligence (AI) safety in November, bringing together top nations to discuss collaborative efforts in navigating the rapidly evolving technology.

The summit, set to take place from November 20-21 in San Francisco, will aim to align international goals and priorities surrounding AI safety. It follows similar summits hosted by the UK and South Korea, and precedes a planned summit in France next year.

“AI is the defining technology of our generation,” stated U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo in a press release. “We want the rules of the road on AI to be underpinned by safety, security and trust, which is why this convening is so important.”

The summit will focus on concerns surrounding the use of generative AI to create deepfakes and forgeries, particularly in areas like election-related materials. The potential for AI to be used for misinformation and manipulation has been a growing concern, as highlighted by recent cases involving AI-generated images of celebrities and fabricated political videos.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of international collaboration, stating that “Strengthening international collaboration on AI safety is critical to harnessing AI technology to solve the world’s greatest challenges.”

The summit will bring together members of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes, established following the South Korea summit, which includes Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Experts from academia and the tech industry will also be invited to participate.

The summit’s focus on safety and security underscores the global concern about the potential risks and ethical implications of rapidly advancing AI technologies.
