Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams celebrated her 59th birthday on Thursday, September 19, aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This marked her second birthday in space, following her first celebration during her 2012 mission. While traditional festivities may be out of reach, Williams, who has been on the ISS since June 6, dedicated her day to crucial mission activities.
Instead of cake and candles, Williams, currently part of the Boeing Crew Flight Test mission, spent her birthday attending a conference with flight directors, discussing future mission objectives and scientific research. She also focused on maintaining the ISS’s life support systems.
Reports detailed Williams’s day, which included replacing filters in the space bathroom with fellow astronaut Don Pettit, followed by discussions with NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston about mission goals and upcoming tasks.
Back on Earth, Indian fans celebrated Williams’s birthday with special tributes. Indian music company Saregama organized a birthday surprise featuring performances by renowned singers like Sonu Nigam, Shaan, and Neeti Mohan. The company encouraged fans to join in the celebration by sharing birthday wishes and videos on social media using the hashtag #HappyBirthdaySunita.
This marks Williams’s third space flight, following her first in 2006 and second in 2012. With a cumulative total of 322 days in space, Williams stands as the second woman astronaut with the highest number of spacewalks.
