Fri Sep 20 07:12:15 UTC 2024: ## One Nation, One Election: A “Weapon of Mass Distraction” or a Feasible Solution?

The Indian government’s proposal for simultaneous elections, dubbed “One Nation, One Election” (ONOE), has ignited heated debate. Critics, led by Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien, argue that the proposal is a mere distraction from pressing issues like unemployment and inflation.

O’Brien highlights the proposal’s potential for undermining federalism, posing a threat to the autonomy of individual states. He points out that ONOE requires extensive constitutional amendments and ratification by half of the states, a process fraught with complexities.

Furthermore, O’Brien emphasizes the logistical challenges of the proposal, questioning how the terms of state assemblies would be adjusted to accommodate the simultaneous elections. He also points out that holding fresh elections for the remainder of a term in case of premature dissolution of a state assembly or the Lok Sabha contradicts the very idea of simultaneous elections.

O’Brien argues that ONOE, akin to the Women’s Reservation Bill, is designed to distract the public from pressing issues and serves as a political maneuver rather than a genuine solution. He contends that the proposed amendments would take years to implement, rendering the proposal ineffective in the near future.

Despite the government’s push for ONOE, its feasibility and practicality remain a subject of intense debate. While proponents tout its potential for efficient governance and cost-effectiveness, critics highlight its detrimental impact on federalism and its potential to act as a distraction from pressing societal issues.
