Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for the United States on Saturday, where he will participate in the Quad Leaders Summit in Wilmington, Delaware. The summit, hosted by US President Joe Biden, will be the first event of Modi’s three-day visit.
Modi emphasized the significance of the Quad, a grouping of like-minded countries – Australia, India, Japan, and the US – committed to working for peace, progress, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. He highlighted his upcoming bilateral meetings with Quad leaders, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and President Biden, to further strengthen partnerships and discuss key areas of cooperation.
The Quad leaders are expected to unveil a special initiative called the Cancer Moonshot, aiming to prevent, detect, and treat cancer. They are also set to announce measures to enhance the group’s work on maritime security, health security, connectivity, infrastructure, disaster relief, and counter-terrorism.
Beyond the Quad Summit, Modi will deliver a speech at the Summit of the Future at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 23, where he will share India’s perspective on global challenges and opportunities.
The Prime Minister’s itinerary also includes several bilateral meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. He will further interact with the Indian diaspora and prominent American business leaders at a community event in New York on September 22, aiming to strengthen the unique partnership between India and the United States.
