Thu Sep 12 06:36:50 UTC 2024: ## Assamese Actress Sumi Borah Surrenders in Rs 2,200 Crore Online Scam, More Industry Figures Under Scrutiny

**Guwahati, September 12:** Controversial Assamese actress Sumi Borah surrendered to police in Dibrugarh on Thursday, becoming the latest figure to be arrested in connection with a massive Rs 2,200 crore online trading scam. The arrest has sparked concerns that other members of the Assamese film industry could be implicated.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared that no one involved in the scam will be spared, warning that those found guilty will face the full force of the law. Sarma’s statement comes after the arrest of Bishal Phukan, the alleged mastermind behind the scam, last week.

Police investigations revealed that Phukan used Borah’s connections in the Assamese film industry to attract clients, promising them high returns on their investments. He allegedly threw lavish parties in Guwahati, showering attendees with expensive gifts, and lured them into investing in his fraudulent scheme. Borah reportedly facilitated the recruitment of clients and received a hefty commission for her role, with authorities alleging she earned Rs 20 crore in just two months.

“Phukan spent Rs 1 crore on expensive clothes for Borah and gave her another Rs 2.5 crore for an overseas trip,” a senior police official stated. “In just two months, Rs 20 crore were transferred into Borah’s bank account. We believe she helped Phukan secure at least Rs 100 crore in investments, including funds from outside the state.”

Borah initially fled after Phukan’s arrest, but later released a video on social media, claiming she was hiding due to negative propaganda and misinformation being spread about her. She announced her intention to surrender to authorities.

With Borah’s arrest and the ongoing investigation, the Assamese film industry is facing intense scrutiny, as authorities are determined to uncover the full extent of the scam and prosecute all involved.
