Red Flag Warning Issued for Front Range Amid High Winds and Dry Conditions

DENVER, CO – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for a large swath of the Front Range and northeastern Colorado, effective until 5 p.m. Thursday. The warning encompasses the lower foothills, the I-25 corridor, and adjacent plains, including portions of Jefferson, Douglas, Boulder, Adams, Arapahoe, Weld, Larimer, Elbert, and Lincoln counties.

Meteorologist Kenley Bonner of the National Weather Service in Boulder explained that the area is vulnerable due to strong winds caused by a mountain wave effect – atmospheric turbulence created by winds interacting with the Rockies. As air descends from the mountains, it warms and accelerates, resulting in compressional warming and creating significantly dry conditions.

The combination of wind gusts up to 45 mph and a relative humidity of only 15 percent creates a high fire risk. Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning or activities that could spark a fire, such as using power tools on dry grass, parking vehicles on vegetation, dragging chains, or improperly discarding cigarettes.

“Just be aware of what you’re doing and don’t do anything reckless that could lead to a really bad day for your neighbors and friends,” Bonner cautioned.

The region is also experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures, roughly 15-20 degrees above average for this time of year. This warm and dry pattern is expected to persist due to a weak La Niña pattern and a high-pressure ridge over the Western U.S.

The National Weather Service anticipates that the winds will subside later this evening, reducing the immediate fire risk. However, vigilance is urged for all residents within the Red Flag Warning area.
