Vietnam Floods Claim 41 Lives, Tens of Thousands Evacuated as More Rain Looms

HANOI, Vietnam – Torrential rains, widespread flooding, and deadly landslides have ravaged central Vietnam, leaving at least 41 people dead and forcing the evacuation of nearly 62,000. Rescue crews are working tirelessly to reach stranded residents, some of whom have sought refuge on rooftops of submerged homes.

Over the past three days, rainfall has exceeded 150 centimeters (60 inches) in several provinces, a region known for its coffee production and popular tourist beaches. The environment ministry confirmed the death toll, adding that the search continues for nine missing individuals. More than 52,000 homes are flooded, major roads are blocked by landslides, and a million customers are without power. A suspension bridge collapsed in Lam Dong province.

Photos from Nha Trang, a coastal tourist hotspot, show entire city blocks underwater. Local businesses are suffering significant damage. The national weather forecast agency warns that the heavy rain is expected to continue, raising the risk of more flooding and landslides.

The government has ordered the mobilization of the army, police, and other security forces to expedite evacuations in the most affected provinces. Rescuers are using boats to reach trapped residents, some of whom have been stranded for extended periods. Some residents turned to social media, pleading for help from rooftops as water levels continued to rise.

Natural disasters have already caused more than $2 billion in damage in Vietnam this year, with 279 people dead or missing. Experts attribute the increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events to the climate crisis.
