**Mandalay, Myanmar – April 5, 2025** – India delivered a substantial 442-metric-tonne consignment of food aid to earthquake-ravaged Myanmar today, as part of its ongoing Operation Brahma. The aid, consisting of rice, cooking oil, biscuits, and noodles, was transported by the Indian Navy landing ship tank INS Gharial and handed over to Yangon’s Chief Minister, U Soe Thein, at Thilawa Port.
The aid follows a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck near Mandalay on March 28, resulting in over 3,100 deaths. India swiftly launched Operation Brahma, providing search and rescue, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and medical assistance. The first tranche of aid was delivered within 24 hours of the earthquake.
The Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, oversaw the handover of the food supplies, which are intended to address the immediate food needs of the affected population. This substantial aid package builds on India’s commitment to assisting Myanmar in its recovery, including rebuilding infrastructure and cultural landmarks damaged by the quake. This commitment was further reinforced by a joint pledge of over USD 20 million in humanitarian assistance from the QUAD nations (India, Australia, Japan, and the U.S.) on Friday. The pledge includes the delivery of relief supplies and deployment of emergency medical teams.
