**Kozhikode, February 12, 2025** – A wildfire that engulfed Vayad and nearby agricultural lands in Kozhikode district on Tuesday evening has been brought under control. The fire, which started around 6 p.m. in a reserve forest, rapidly spread through grasslands and agricultural areas due to dry leaves and strong winds.
Local residents alerted fire services, but the distance to the fire (approximately 4 km from Vilangad town) hampered immediate response. While firefighters were en route, locals worked to contain the blaze using green shrubs. The fire was eventually extinguished around midnight through a combined effort.
The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but Payyekkandi ward councillor Shaju Tom Plakkal stated that agricultural impact was minimal. Locals confirmed that such wildfires are common in the area during this time of year, with wind speed playing a significant role in their spread.
