**New Delhi** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a blistering attack on the Opposition in the Lok Sabha today, accusing them of hypocrisy and lacking understanding of the Indian Constitution. His speech, responding to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address, focused heavily on the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, and specifically, Rahul Gandhi.
Modi accused the Opposition, particularly the Congress, of selectively using the Constitution for political gain, while allegedly failing to uphold its principles in practice. He cited the Congress’s past policies, referencing former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s admission that only a small fraction of funds allocated for the poor actually reached them. In contrast, Modi highlighted his government’s direct benefit transfer schemes, claiming to have lifted 25 crore people out of poverty and provided four crore houses.
The Prime Minister also targeted Rahul Gandhi’s frequent display of the Constitution, stating that those who carry it symbolically often neglect the needs of marginalized communities, specifically mentioning Muslim women. He further criticized Gandhi’s comments on Chinese soldiers on Indian soil, referencing a privilege motion filed against Gandhi by BJP leader Nishikant Dubey. Modi also labelled some Opposition members as “Urban Naxals,” a term frequently used to criticize those critical of the government.
Modi’s speech comes amidst ongoing political tensions, with the Opposition alleging the BJP seeks to undermine the Constitution. However, Modi countered this, stating that the BJP’s adherence to the Constitution is evident in its inclusive practices, citing the inclusion of Opposition leaders in meetings regarding the Election Commission. The Prime Minister emphasized that only the BJP and its allies truly understand and live by the spirit of the Constitution.
