**Malappuram, Kerala –** An 18-year-old woman, Shaima Sinivar, died by suicide in Malappuram district just one day before her scheduled wedding. Local reports indicate Shaima was deeply distressed over being forced into an arranged marriage against her will. She had been in a relationship with her 19-year-old neighbor, Sajeer, and wished to marry him. Her family, however, had arranged a different match, leading to her engagement just a week before the tragic event.
Shaima ended her life by hanging herself at her uncle’s house, where she resided after the death of her father. Following the discovery of her body, Sajeer attempted suicide by slitting his wrist. He was hospitalized at Manjeri Medical College and is reportedly recovering.
Police have launched an investigation into Shaima’s death, registering it as a case of unnatural death. The case highlights the tragic consequences of forced marriages and societal pressures.
This incident follows another recent suicide in Malappuram. 25-year-old Vishnuja was found dead at her home, prompting the arrest of her husband, Prabhin, on charges of abetment to suicide and cruelty. Her family alleges she suffered both physical and mental abuse. The string of suicides has once again brought the issue of domestic violence and societal pressures in the region into sharp focus.
