**New Delhi, [Date]** – Delhiites headed to the polls today in a highly anticipated election for all 70 seats in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. Voting began this morning and is expected to continue throughout the day at 13,766 polling stations across the city. A total of 1.56 crore voters, including 83.76 lakh men, 72.36 lakh women, and 1,267 third gender voters, are eligible to cast their ballots. The Election Commission has designated 733 polling centers for voters with disabilities.
Prominent figures from the BJP, Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) – the three major contenders – cast their votes early, with each party reiterating its promises of various free services for Delhi residents if elected. The BJP’s Virendra Sachdeva, Congress’s Sandeep Dixit and Alka Lamba, and AAP’s Manish Sisodia were among those who voted and spoke to the media. Dixit emphasized the importance of voters choosing candidates who address their aspirations, while Sachdeva predicted a BJP victory, accusing AAP of resorting to “goon tactics.”
The election is considered highly competitive, with AAP aiming for a third consecutive term and the BJP confident of securing power. Both AAP and BJP have fielded several candidates who have switched parties. Several incidents have been reported, including allegations of violations of the model code of conduct against AAP MLAs Amanatullah Khan and Dinesh Mohania, leading to police complaints. There have also been reports of irregularities at some polling stations, including issues with EVMs and lighting.
Young voters, like 21-year-old Ishita, highlighted concerns such as unemployment as a key factor influencing their vote, while senior citizens emphasized their civic duty. Several prominent figures, including Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, participated in the voting process.
Exit polls will be released later today by various news channels and survey agencies, though their predictions remain uncertain until the official results are announced on February 8th. In the 2020 elections, AAP won a landslide victory with 62 seats, while the BJP secured 8 and Congress drew a blank. The outcome of this election is expected to be closely watched across the nation.
