**Imphal, Manipur –** The Manipur Congress has accused Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh of threatening MLAs to prevent a no-confidence motion against his government. Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, leading a Congress delegation, met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Monday to report the alleged threats.
According to Mr. Singh, the Chief Minister publicly stated on January 14th that any MLA moving a no-confidence motion would face repercussions from the public. Mr. Singh described this statement as “uncivilized and unbecoming of a leader,” emphasizing that proposing a no-confidence motion is a constitutional right of MLAs.
The Congress delegation submitted a memorandum to the Governor, urging him to advise the state government and holding it responsible for any untoward incidents during the upcoming Assembly session, which begins February 10th. The Congress will consult its MLAs to decide whether to proceed with the motion. The absence of ten Kuki MLAs, seven of whom belong to the BJP, due to the ongoing ethnic conflict, is also expected to impact the session.
