Mon Feb 03 11:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Tax Season Opens: IRS Launches “Where’s My Refund?” App to Track Payments
**Washington, D.C. – January 30, 2025** – Tax season is officially underway, with the IRS accepting returns since January 27th. Millions of Americans are already utilizing the IRS’s “Where’s My Refund?” app and IRS2Go mobile app to track their tax refunds. The IRS anticipates approximately 140 million tax returns will be filed by the April 15th deadline.
Last year, two-thirds of taxpayers received an average refund of $3,100. While this often represents a significant sum for households, financial experts emphasize that a large refund signifies overpayment throughout the year, essentially an interest-free loan to the government. Conversely, others view it as a form of forced savings.
The “Where’s My Refund?” service, accessible online and via the IRS2Go app, provides updates approximately 24 hours after e-filing. Paper filers should expect a four-week wait. The service requires taxpayers to provide relevant information to track their return’s status, from receipt to approval and deposit date.
E-filed returns typically process within 21 days, potentially faster for those using the IRS Free File service (available for those with an adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less). Paper returns and claims involving the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) may experience delays, with EITC/ACTC refunds expected by March 3rd for direct deposit filers.
Errors like mathematical mistakes, incorrect Social Security numbers, or misspelled names can also cause delays. The IRS has adjusted tax brackets for 2025 by 2.8% to account for inflation, but this change does not affect 2024 returns.
