**Ayodhya, India** – Mahant Satyendra Das, the 85-year-old head priest of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya, is in critical but stable condition after suffering a brain stroke. Das was admitted to the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow on Sunday following initial treatment.
A statement released by SGPGI on Monday confirmed that Das, who suffers from diabetes and hypertension, is currently in the Neurology ward’s High Dependency Unit. While his condition is described as critical, hospital officials reported that he is responsive and his vital signs are stable. He remains under close medical observation.
Das, a highly respected figure and long-serving priest, was present at the Ram Janmabhoomi site during the demolition of the Babri Mosque in December 1992. A member of the Nirvani Akhara, he was known for his accessibility to the media and deep knowledge of the Ayodhya movement’s history.
Sharad Sharma, a spokesperson for the Vishva Hindu Parishad in Ayodhya, expressed well wishes for Das’s speedy recovery. Prayers for the priest’s health are being offered across the community.
