Sat Feb 01 15:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Electric Scout Returns: Volkswagen Revives Iconic Off-Roader

**Blythewood, SC** – Volkswagen is bringing back the legendary Scout nameplate, launching two all-electric vehicles: the Terra pickup truck and the Traveler SUV. The new Scout Motors brand, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, acquired the rights from International Harvester, the original manufacturer of the iconic off-road vehicles popular from the 1960s to the 1980s.

The original International Scout, a pioneer in the modern SUV category, transitioned the vehicle from purely utilitarian farm equipment to a recreational powerhouse, influencing the design and popularity of SUVs for decades to come. The new electric models will be built on a new electric box-frame chassis platform at a facility in Blythewood, South Carolina, and are slated for production in 2027.

While the new Scouts will be all-electric, they are incorporating a range extender to address range anxiety, promising a 500-mile range. This addresses a key concern with current EV technology and cleverly pays homage to the original Scout’s robust and adaptable nature.

The revival of the Scout brand capitalizes on its rich history and enduring legacy. The original Scout, available in various body styles including pickups and SUVs with hard and soft tops, is now a sought-after classic vehicle. Its history also includes special editions, such as the Red Carpet Edition, and even success in off-road racing competitions like the Baja 1000. Scout Motors plans to participate in the Baja 1000 with a classic Scout to highlight the brand’s return. This launch marks a significant moment in automotive history, reviving a beloved nameplate for a new generation of drivers while acknowledging its profound impact on the SUV market.
