Fri Jan 17 19:10:00 UTC 2025: ## UC San Diego Enrollment Surges, Outpacing All Other UC Campuses
**La Jolla, CA** – UC San Diego (UCSD) experienced a record-breaking enrollment surge this fall, adding 1,880 students – more than double the growth of any other University of California campus. This dramatic increase brings UCSD’s total enrollment to 44,256, surpassing projected figures by 15 years. The university anticipates reaching 50,000 students by 2030 and potentially 56,000 by 2040.
This unprecedented growth, fueled by a deliberate expansion strategy initiated in 2013, has transformed the campus landscape. The UC Board of Regents has prioritized UCSD for increased enrollment due to its capacity for expansion, a factor contributing to the university’s rapid growth while other campuses face limitations.
The surge also reflects a significant demographic shift. For the first time since 2006, women now outnumber men at UCSD (50.3% vs. 45.5%), a trend mirroring national higher education patterns. Meanwhile, the percentage of international students has declined from 21.6% in 2017 to 16.2% last fall, largely due to state legislative mandates prioritizing California residents and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical factors. Conversely, the proportion of California residents at UCSD has increased to 72.4%.
UCSD’s remarkable growth contrasts with other UC campuses. UCLA saw the second-highest increase with 657 additional students, while UC Berkeley’s growth has plateaued due to capacity constraints. If current trends persist, UCSD could soon surpass UC Berkeley to become the second-largest UC campus. To accommodate the influx of students, UCSD is planning a new campus village capable of housing an additional 6,000 students.
