Fri Jan 17 17:30:40 UTC 2025: ## BJP Appoints Dilip Saikia as Assam Unit President
**Guwahati, January 17, 2025** – Dilip Saikia, a Lok Sabha member, has been elected unopposed as the new president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Assam unit. The appointment comes a little over a year before the 2026 Assembly elections.
Saikia, 51, filed his nomination on Thursday and was formally appointed on Friday morning in a ceremony attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and several Union Ministers. He succeeds Bhabesh Kalita, a former minister who held the position for an extended term.
Chief Minister Sarma praised Kalita’s contributions, highlighting his role in the BJP’s record-breaking performance in the 2024 parliamentary elections and the party’s increased seat count in the Assam Assembly. Sarma also credited Kalita with successes in by-elections and exceeding membership drive targets.
Saikia, a two-time MP representing the Darrang-Udalguri seat, has a background in student politics, having held positions in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He also served as a national general secretary of the BJP. His appointment is seen as a strategic move by the party ahead of the crucial state elections.
