**NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CP)** — After 15 years as lead singer, Michael Tait has announced his departure from the Christian rock band Newsboys. In a social media statement Thursday, Tait, 58, cited prayer and a sense of clarity in this new season of life as his reasons for leaving.
Tait joined the band in 2009, following the departure of Peter Furler. His tenure saw a resurgence for the Newsboys, with the release of several chart-topping albums, including *Born Again* and *God’s Not Dead*. The band expanded its global reach significantly during this period.
While expressing his gratitude for his time with the Newsboys and acknowledging the difficulty of his decision, Tait emphasized that his departure was guided by his faith, referencing Matthew 6:33. The band’s statement assures fans that the upcoming “Worldwide Revival Nights” tour, running through August, will continue as planned. They emphasized their commitment to moving forward together in worship and promised future updates regarding the band’s future plans.
Newsboys, formed in Australia in 1985, has a long history of success in Christian contemporary music, garnering numerous accolades including Grammy nominations and Dove Awards. Prior to joining Newsboys, Tait was a member of the popular group DC Talk and fronted his own band, Tait. Keyboardist Jeff Frankenstein recently attributed the band’s longevity to their commitment to biblical truth and their diverse, multicultural makeup, also crediting Tait’s leadership with their recent successes.
