
Fri Jan 17 01:57:52 UTC 2025: ## Two Dead, Dozens Injured in Multiple Jallikattu Events Across Tamil Nadu
**Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu – January 17, 2025** – Two elderly spectators died and dozens were injured in separate Jallikattu events across Tamil Nadu on Thursday. The bull-taming events, traditional to the state, resulted in fatalities and numerous injuries at venues in Karur, Pudukottai, Tiruchi, and Salem districts.
In Karur district’s Rachandar Thirumalai village, 65-year-old N. Kuzhandaivelu succumbed to injuries after being gored by a bull. Simultaneously, in Mangadevanpatti, Pudukottai district, 70-year-old C. Perumal died after being hit by a bull. Both men were rushed to hospitals but succumbed to their injuries.
The events, inaugurated by state ministers V. Senthilbalaji and Siva. V. Meyyanathan respectively, saw high participation. Rachandar Thirumalai witnessed 734 bulls and 372 tamers, resulting in 62 injuries. Mangadevanpatti had over 600 bulls and 300 tamers, with 11 injuries reported. Avarangadu in Tiruchi district saw 56 injuries amongst 237 tamers and 590 bulls, while Vanniyanviduthi in Pudukottai saw 38 injuries (7 requiring hospitalization) among 200 tamers and 638 bulls.
In a separate incident in Salem district, a 42-year-old man, M. Manivel, was fatally gored by a bull during an unauthorized Jallikattu event in Sentharapatti village. Five others sustained injuries in this event. Police have launched an investigation into the unauthorized event.
The incidents highlight the inherent risks associated with Jallikattu despite safety measures. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatalities and injuries.
