**NEW DELHI, January 17, 2025** – Millions of Hindu women across India observed Sakat Chauth today, a significant fast dedicated to Lord Ganesha. This annual observance, also known as Sankashti Chaturthi, Vakrakundi Chaturthi, and Tilkuta Chauth, falls in the month of Magh and is particularly auspicious. Mothers undertake a day-long nirjala (waterless) fast, praying for their children’s long life and well-being.

The auspicious timings for the Sakat Chauth puja were between 5:27 AM and 6:21 AM, and 8:34 AM and 9:53 AM. The Chaturthi Tithi began at 4:06 AM on January 17th and concluded at 8:30 AM on January 18th. Offerings to the moon were made at 9:09 PM.

The day involves ritualistic bathing, donning red clothes, and performing elaborate pujas to Lord Ganesha and Lakshmi. After a day of fasting, devotees break their fast in the evening after offering prayers to the moon. It’s believed that observing this fast with complete devotion ensures the child’s health and attracts Ganesha’s blessings. The legend associated with Sakat Chauth tells of Lord Ganesha overcoming a great adversity, leading to his gaining the status of the first worshipped deity and receiving blessings from 330 million Gods. It’s believed that Lord Ganesha fulfills the desires of those who observe this fast with sincerity.
