Fri Jan 17 15:31:44 UTC 2025: ## Illegal LED Fishing Devastates Kollam Coast Ecosystem

**KOLLAM, January 17, 2025** – Destructive fishing practices employing high-intensity LED lights are causing widespread damage to the marine ecosystem along the Kollam coast, despite strict regulatory measures. Numerous boats, including trawlers, are using these lights to attract and catch large quantities of fish, depleting resources and threatening the livelihoods of traditional fishers.

A recent crackdown by the Fisheries Department resulted in the seizure of equipment used for illegal fishing, including LED lights, batteries, and nets. The department conducted joint inspections with Marine Enforcement and vowed to continue enforcement actions against violators under the Kerala Marine Fishing Regulation Act (KMFRA).

Traditional fishers, who utilize sustainable methods, report that boats from Thiruvananthapuram and several purse seine vessels continue to illegally use LED lights, leading to conflicts and depleted fish stocks. They highlight the detrimental impact of catching juvenile and non-targeted species, warning of long-term damage to the marine environment and the sustainability of the fishing sector. The traditional fishing community is calling for increased enforcement, including more regular patrols, to curb this destructive practice.
