**Mumbai, India –** Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan is recovering in Lilavati Hospital after being stabbed six times during a home invasion at his Bandra residence early Thursday morning. The attack, which left him with a spinal injury requiring surgery, occurred during a burglary attempt.
According to police, the intruder, who remains at large, entered Khan’s 11th-floor apartment and was first spotted in the room of Khan’s younger son, Jeh, by the child’s nanny. The nanny, Eliyama Philip, confronted the assailant, who then demanded ₹1 crore (approximately $120,000 USD). A struggle ensued, resulting in injuries to the nanny and ultimately leading to the attack on Khan when he intervened. The attacker fled the scene, possibly using the building’s service shaft and stairs, and was last seen on the sixth floor. Police have recovered a piece of the knife used in the attack from Khan’s spine.
Khan sustained serious injuries, including a spinal fluid leak and wounds to his hand and neck. He underwent surgery to repair the spinal injury and received plastic surgery for his other wounds. Police have launched a large-scale manhunt, forming 20 teams to apprehend the suspect and are questioning individuals who were working on the building’s terrace. A case has been registered under sections related to robbery, trespassing, and grievous hurt.
Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif Ali Khan’s wife, issued a statement on Instagram pleading for privacy and respecting the family’s need for space to heal. The incident has sparked a political debate, with opposition parties criticizing the BJP-led state government over the safety and security of celebrities in Mumbai. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, however, stated that while the incident was unfortunate, it didn’t reflect on the overall safety of Mumbai.
