**Bengaluru, January 18, 2025** – Commuters on Bengaluru’s overcrowded Namma Metro Purple Line can expect significant improvements soon, thanks to planned upgrades by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The BMRCL is addressing widespread complaints about overcrowding and delays through infrastructure improvements and the introduction of new trains.
Key upgrades include a 40-meter extension of the shunting neck at Whitefield station, allowing trains to turn around more efficiently on the viaduct instead of traveling to a distant depot. This, along with an additional 400 meters of space created between the platform and tracks at Whitefield, will enable trains to maintain higher speeds, reducing delays. Currently, trains must slow down drastically when approaching the station, causing significant delays.
Further easing congestion, the BMRCL has received its first Distance To Go (DTG) train from CRRC, a six-coach train that will increase train frequency on the Purple Line. This is the first of 21 six-coach DTG trains ordered; the remaining 20 will be manufactured locally by Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL). All Purple and Green Line trains are expected to be delivered by the first quarter of 2027.
Commuters have expressed relief at the news. Shruthi Naik, a software engineer, noted the persistent overcrowding and delays, while Swagath Krishnan highlighted peak-hour overcrowding and excessive waiting times. Both expressed optimism that the improvements will significantly improve their commutes. The upgrades are expected to reduce travel times and alleviate the persistent overcrowding problems plaguing the Purple Line.
