Fri Jan 17 14:28:27 UTC 2025: ## Smooth Jallikattu Events in Madurai Despite Large Crowds

**Madurai, January 17, 2025** – The annual Jallikattu bull-taming events in Madurai, Alanganallur, and Palamedu concluded successfully today despite the large turnout of spectators, bull tamers, and bull owners. Effective police planning and execution were credited with ensuring the smooth and safe conduct of the events, which began on Pongal day in Avaniyapuram.

Over 1,100 bulls were registered for the Avaniyapuram event, the first of the season. Police implemented improved safety measures, including narrow, kilometer-long passages to prevent overcrowding during bull entry. Bulls were released in batches of 100, and wire mesh barricades prevented them from injuring participants. In Alanganallur and Palamedu, access to bull assembly and collection points was strictly controlled.

While the Palamedu riverbed provided ample space for spectators, the smaller arenas in other locations led to overcrowding beyond the designated viewing areas. Despite restrictions on the number of assistants allowed per bull, the large number of people involved in capturing bulls after their runs, particularly as the events progressed, posed challenges. A tragic incident occurred when a man assisting a bull owner was killed by a bull near a collection point.

Despite this incident, police presence, including officers stationed on cargo vehicles using public address systems, facilitated crowd management. The overall assessment was one of a successful event execution despite the inherent challenges of such a large-scale, traditional event.
