**New Delhi, India** – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented a 10-point policy aimed at curbing what it terms the “star culture” within the national cricket team, following a string of disappointing performances. The new rules, reportedly prompted by head coach Gautam Gambhir following a review of recent losses, mandate increased discipline and team unity.
Key provisions include making participation in domestic matches mandatory, restricting family and personal staff on tours, and banning individual commercial endorsements during ongoing series. The policy, obtained by PTI, specifically limits family visits to two weeks on tours exceeding 45 days. Players must also obtain approval from both Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar for any exceptions.
Non-compliance will result in sanctions, potentially including reductions in central contract fees and bans from the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL). The BCCI cites the team’s recent disastrous tour of Australia, where they lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade, and a series whitewash against New Zealand, as the impetus for the changes.
The policy addresses several issues: separate travel arrangements by players and their families are discouraged; strict baggage limits are enforced; the number of personal staff allowed on tour is restricted; and players are required to attend all practice sessions. The BCCI also aims to curtail the practice of players sending equipment separately, often incurring extra costs.
The move has been seen as a direct response to instances of individual players prioritizing personal interests over team cohesion, including separate travel arrangements and early departures from practice sessions. The BCCI states the goal is to improve professional standards and operational efficiency. While the new rules are strict, the BCCI maintains that they are necessary to foster a more disciplined and unified team environment.
