PRAYAGRAJ, INDIA – January 14, 2025 – The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest peaceful gatherings, commenced in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh on Monday, January 13th. Over six million devotees took their first holy dip in the Triveni Sangam on the opening day. This once-in-144-year event is expected to draw an estimated 450 million pilgrims from across the globe over its 45-day duration, concluding on February 26th.

The Mela features six auspicious bathing days, including three main “Shahi Snans” (royal baths) on Makar Sankranti (January 14th), Mauni Amavasya (January 29th), and Basant Panchami (February 3rd). These days are expected to see massive crowds, with an estimated 40-50 million devotees anticipated during the Mauni Amavasya period alone. Devotees seeking a less crowded experience are encouraged to visit on other days during the 45-day period.

The Uttar Pradesh government has made extensive preparations for the influx of pilgrims, establishing several temporary tent cities near the Triveni Sangam offering a range of accommodation, from basic shelters to luxury options provided by the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) and IRCTC. Hotels and lodges within Prayagraj city also offer a range of accommodations. However, booking well in advance is strongly recommended.

The event is projected to generate a significant economic impact, with estimates exceeding ₹2 lakh crore (approximately $24 billion USD) in overall trade, and ₹40,000 crore (approximately $4.8 billion USD) specifically from local hotels and temporary lodging.

The Maha Kumbh Mela offers a unique blend of spirituality and culture, and organizers advise visitors to plan their trip carefully, considering both travel dates and accommodation to ensure a smooth and fulfilling experience. The Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, is approximately 23 kilometers from Bamrauli Airport and 10 kilometers from Prayagraj Junction.
