Sun Jan 12 11:18:23 UTC 2025: ## India’s Cricket Captaincy Under Scrutiny After Series Losses

**Mumbai, India** – Following India’s humiliating 3-1 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and a prior 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand at home, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held a review meeting on January 11th in Mumbai. The meeting focused on the performance of both head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma, with Sharma’s captaincy facing intense scrutiny.

While Sharma confirmed his continued captaincy for the next two to three months, his long-term future remains uncertain. His position hinges on India’s performance in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Previously, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had indicated that Rohit would retain the captaincy if India reached the finals of both the Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship. However, with India’s elimination from the WTC final, the Champions Trophy becomes a crucial test for Sharma’s leadership. His Test captaincy is particularly vulnerable.

The meeting also considered Jasprit Bumrah as a potential replacement for Test captain. While Bumrah is considered a capable leader, concerns remain about his injury proneness and availability for an upcoming five-match Test series in England, as well as the Champions Trophy. His recent injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy further fuels these concerns.
