Sat Jan 11 18:10:44 UTC 2025: ## Telangana Snake Rescue Society Reports Record-Breaking Year with Zero Volunteer Injuries

**Hyderabad, January 12, 2025** – The Friends of Snakes Society (FOS) in Telangana announced a record-breaking year in 2024, rescuing 13,028 snakes with zero snakebite incidents among its volunteers. This represents a nearly four-fold increase compared to 3,389 rescues in 2015 and highlights the growing public awareness of snake conservation and the organization’s enhanced capabilities.

The most frequently rescued species were the Spectacled Cobra (6,186) and the Indian Rat Snake (3,120), indicating their adaptability to urban environments. A total of 6,836 venomous snakes were rescued.

Avinash Viswanathan, FOS general secretary, attributed the zero-injury record to rigorous training, safety protocols, and the use of species-specific handling techniques. He emphasized the importance of the society’s ongoing research into seasonal snake activity and habitat use to further refine conservation strategies and improve nationwide forecasting of snake activity. The research will provide valuable insights into snake ecology in human-modified environments.

The decade-long work of FOS has resulted in the rescue and rehabilitation of 75,000 snakes across the state.
