LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Chicago Bears are pulling out all the stops in their search for a new head coach, upgrading travel arrangements for candidates and interviewing a wide range of individuals. After firing Matt Eberflus in November, the team, under General Manager Ryan Poles, is aiming to make a lasting impression on potential replacements. A team source confirmed to ESPN that candidates will no longer be flown economy class, a significant change from past practices.

The Bears have already requested interviews with over 14 candidates, a list that includes former NFL head coaches Mike Vrabel and Pete Carroll. While their request to interview Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was denied, the team is actively pursuing a diverse pool, also considering candidates with no prior head coaching experience such as Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

GM Poles emphasized the importance of experience, stating that previous head coaching experience offers valuable insight. However, he stressed that the search is not limited to candidates with such backgrounds. The team is navigating playoff schedules and a multi-round interview process, both virtual and in-person, to ensure a thorough evaluation.

A key aspect of the search is the development of rookie quarterback Justin Fields, who, despite setting rookie passing records, also faced a league-high number of sacks. The Bears are looking for a coach who can create a successful plan for his development, though Poles clarified that they aren’t prioritizing offensive-minded coaches at this stage.

The team’s organizational structure remains unchanged, with the head coach reporting to the GM, who reports to the team president, and ultimately, the chairman. Questions surrounding Poles’ job security and contract status have surfaced, but team chairman George McCaskey stated that this hasn’t been a concern for candidates in the past.

The Bears’ interview committee, comprised of Poles, team president Kevin Warren, McCaskey, and several other key personnel, is leveraging outside consultants to gather information and conduct thorough background checks on candidates. The extensive search, along with the improved travel arrangements, signal the Bears’ commitment to finding a first-class head coach to lead the franchise into a new era.
