**NEW ORLEANS, LA** – The FBI revealed Sunday that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the US Army veteran responsible for the New Year’s Day ramming attack that killed 14 and injured at least 30 in New Orleans’ French Quarter, conducted reconnaissance missions prior to the attack. Investigators showed video footage of Jabbar using camera-equipped Meta glasses to record the French Quarter during a visit in late October. The video also shows him seemingly testing the glasses’ functionality. He returned to the city on November 10th before carrying out the attack on January 1st.
Jabbar, who had declared allegiance to ISIS on social media, drove a rented pickup truck through barricades and down Bourbon Street at high speed before being killed in a shootout with police. The FBI stated that Jabbar had traveled to Cairo, Egypt for 11 days in summer 2023 and to Ontario, Canada for three days shortly thereafter. The purpose of these trips remains unclear, and the FBI is seeking information on any contacts he may have made.
Two firearms, a 9mm pistol and a .308-caliber semi-automatic rifle, were recovered. Investigators also discovered two unexploded homemade bombs along Jabbar’s route, suggesting a potentially even more devastating outcome had police not responded swiftly. The FBI is continuing its investigation into Jabbar’s motives and international travels.
