**New York, NY** – The American Kennel Club (AKC) welcomes its newest member, the Danish-Swedish Farmdog (DSF), a breed with Viking origins dating back over 1,000 years. Eligible to compete in AKC events starting January 1, 2025, the DSF is the AKC’s 202nd recognized breed and joins the Working Group.
The compact, energetic breed, popular in Scandinavia and parts of Europe, nearly went extinct following the Industrial Revolution. However, dedicated efforts by Danish and Swedish kennel clubs preserved the breed, leading to its dual-country namesake. While DSFs have likely been in the U.S. for years, a concerted effort beginning in 1998 by several importers and breeders, led to the formation of the Danish-Swedish Farmdog Club of America in 2019. This club played a crucial role in navigating the rigorous AKC recognition process, including establishing a breed standard, meeting population requirements, and demonstrating the breed’s health and temperament.
Despite their ancient lineage, many Americans are unfamiliar with the breed, often mistaking them for Jack Russells or Beagles. To combat this, the club is actively educating the public through outreach events and informational materials.
The DSF is described as a versatile, cheerful companion, equally at home cuddling on the couch as it is participating in canine sports like agility, scent work, and dock diving. Their hardy nature and long lifespan (16-18 years) add to their appeal. The club maintains a strong focus on breed health, encouraging voluntary health testing among its members.
With full AKC recognition, the Danish-Swedish Farmdog is poised to gain wider popularity in the United States, offering a unique blend of history, athleticism, and affectionate companionship. The breed’s playful nature and versatility make it an exciting addition to the AKC family.
