**NEW DELHI** – While China is experiencing a surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections, Indian health experts are urging calm, assuring the public that the virus poses no immediate cause for concern. HMPV, a respiratory illness with flu-like symptoms similar to COVID-19, is not a new virus and has been known for over two decades.
Leading Indian pediatricians and respiratory specialists, including Dr. Suresh Gupta and Dr. Bobby Bhalotra of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, have emphasized the typically mild nature of the virus. They described symptoms as primarily cold, cough, and fever, often resolving without medical intervention. Hospitalizations are rare, particularly among children. Both doctors noted that HMPV is already present in India, particularly during winter months, and the strain currently circulating is considered mild.
The Union Health Ministry convened a meeting on Saturday to address the situation in China, concluding that the surge is due to a combination of viruses – including influenza, RSV, and HMPV – typical for this season. The ministry highlighted India’s existing robust surveillance system for respiratory illnesses and announced that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will expand HMPV testing to further monitor the situation.
The ministry stressed that current conditions do not warrant widespread alarm, emphasizing India’s preparedness to manage respiratory illnesses effectively. While increased vigilance is warranted, the overall message is one of reassurance, highlighting the well-understood nature of HMPV and India’s existing health infrastructure.
