**Los Angeles, CA –** Acclaimed writer-director Jeff Baena, known for his quirky and thought-provoking films, died by suicide at age 47, authorities confirmed on Friday, January 3rd. Baena’s body was discovered at his Los Angeles home by an assistant. The Los Angeles Medical Examiner ruled the death a suicide by hanging.
Baena, a Miami native, began his career collaborating with director David O. Russell on *I Heart Huckabees* (2004). He subsequently directed five feature films, many premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, including the 2014 zombie comedy *Life After Beth*, which marked the start of his creative partnership with his wife, actress Aubrey Plaza. His other notable works include *Joshy*, *The Little Hours*, *Horse Girl*, and *Spin Me Round*. Baena and Plaza, who married in 2021, collaborated on four films together.
Baena’s unique cinematic vision and his collaborations with Plaza were widely celebrated. In interviews, he often spoke of his attraction to unconventional storytelling. He is survived by Plaza, his parents, step-parents, brother and step-siblings.
